Start of Work
The start of work is the time you begin working. Enter the starting time in HH:MM format – for example 08:30. The working hours calculator accepts all times between 00:00 and 23:59.

Basics
General Information on Working Hours
Working hours describe the period between the start and end of work, excluding break times. In Germany, the Working Hours Act (ArbZG) regulates maximum daily and weekly working hours, rest breaks, and rest periods.
The regular weekly working hours for full-time employees are usually 38.5 to 40 hours per week, distributed over 5 working days. Part-time employees work between 15 and 30 hours per week, minijobbers up to 10 hours.
A working hours account documents the hours worked and compares them with the agreed target working hours. Positive differences are counted as overtime, negative as minus hours. The working hours calculator handles this calculation automatically for each individual day and the entire week.
Typical working hour models in Germany include: full-time, part-time, flextime, shift work, minijobs, and remote work policies. Each model has its own calculation basis for hourly wages, overtime, and break times.

What are the legal regulations for working hours?
The German Working Hours Act (ArbZG) regulates maximum working hours, rest breaks, and rest periods for employees. The regulations apply to all industries and working models – from full-time and part-time to shift work and minijobs.
Maximum Daily Working Time
Regular daily working hours are 8 hours. An extension to 10 hours per day is permitted if an average of 8 hours per working day is not exceeded within 6 calendar months (§ 3 ArbZG).
Rest Breaks
Employees receive a break of at least 30 minutes for working hours of 6 to 9 hours, and at least 45 minutes for working hours over 9 hours. Breaks can be split into segments of at least 15 minutes each (§ 4 ArbZG).
Rest Period
There must be an uninterrupted rest period of at least 11 hours between two working days (§ 5 ArbZG). Special regulations apply to certain sectors like gastronomy and hospitals.
Duty to Record
Employers in Germany are obliged to systematically record employees' working hours since the BAG ruling in 2022. The working hours calculator serves as a tool for documenting daily working hours.

The net working time results from the difference between the end of work and the start of work, excluding break times. The calculation formula is: Net working time = (End of work − Start of work) − Break time.
Example: Start of work at 08:30, end of work at 17:00 and a 45-minute break results in a gross working time of 8 hours 30 minutes (510 minutes) and a net working time of 7 hours 45 minutes (465 minutes) – which corresponds to 7.75 decimal hours.
